Hello!

This is the first newsletter of this year: I wish you all a nice new
year 2012 with health and happiness for you and all your beloved. The
past two weeks showed intense activity in China (DDL mirror), Belgium
(communication) and France (DDL on ARM™) – and more. I must say this is
a very good new year start for the project. May it be a slow start
indeed!

All the best,
JM.

PS: if you think that I forgot to mention an important news, feel free
to answer this mail with your scoop!

Team
=====

* Holox asked to create the Finnish team that Jusii joined.

* Frédéric joined the team as a drawer, thanks to Xavier.

Welcome to our project!

Organization
===========

* Our main Chinese contributors are doing their best to have DDL
visible in China. I recall that the Great (Fire)Wall of China is
blocking our website ddl.org. The situation is now the following:

  - Born has registered ddl.cn and can host a website
  - Fox had our Chinese CD mirrored on http://mirror.bjtu.edu.cn/doudoulinux/
  - NagiosFree proposed help manage our future Chinese webwite
  - Benheng started to contact other mirrors

Benheng reported that they opened several pages to tell about our
project in China [1][2][3], Fox will maintain these pages.

Thank you all for your work!

* We are now owning several domains related to DDL:
  - I own ddl.org, ddl.fr and ddl.com
  - Xavier owns ddl.be
  - Born owns ddl.cn and ddl.net

I invite you to register your national domain and report us your
ownership. I prefer see them owned by our community instead of owned by
resellers.

Translations
============

* Translations were submitted on Transifex for Finnish (Holox) and Swedish
(Omnitrax).

Development
===========

* Gérald and I are very pleased to announce that we have produced the
very first version of DDL on ARM™. A post on our dev's blog has been
published for this important event [1]. Everything does not work fine
but the DDL environment is complete and running :). A first disk image
will be released soon on our website.

* To have DDL on ARM, I had to move the LiveCD tricks into Debian
packages. Although it is not fully completed yet, enough has been done
to make the full DDL environment installed on ARM using these packages.
In a near future, it'll be possible to switch any Debian or Debian-like
OS (Ubuntu?) to DDL thanks to these packages :).

* I found a way to have the size of icons adapted to the screen
resolution in advanced activities. This results in a similar rendering
whatever the screen size [2].

* Unfortunately I won't be able to publish Gondwana 1.2 this month as
previously planned. I had too many technical issues to solve plus
unexpected unavailability. Finally I prefer postpone this update for
March, just before we switch on Transifex all our translation sources
to the versions of the development release.

Artwork
=======

* Benoît and Elisa are working on drawing our dev's poster (for hiring
more contributors).

Website
=======

* Marian published a news about the lastest development release:
“Lansarea noii versiuni în dezvoltare 2011-11”.

* Sergey has translated into Russian “Posting Debian bug reports” and
“Splitting a Debian package”.

* Sergey had two students translate web pages into German and is now
looking for a German proofreader [1].

Communication
=============

* What a deception: our stand at FOSDEM has been refused :(. It seems
they had too many projects for the number of stands and couldn't accept
every project.

* Xavier is going to present DDL to several Belgian school professors
and should install it on several computers. Cross fingers :).

* He recently talked about DDL on an Internet radio (in French).

* The French article for a paper magazine is finished. It still needs
to be reread before submission to the magazine.

* I recall that Salvatore launched the translation of our Wikipedia
article into English [1]. The idea is to split the effort among several
translators who understand Latin languages. Unfortunately we're still
lacking of volunteers :(.

Support
=======

* A user had troubles when installing DDL 2011-11 on HD [1]. This is a
known issue as indicated in the ticket.
