Hi Richard, > Rewrote the USB and tried it again on the desktop and it runs fine. > Actually writing this via the Tux login, from Epiphany. Had to scratch > my head a while to find a browser. :)
Just great! Yes, don't search for main stream web browsers, I prefer put children on the light, fast and simpler Epiphany. > I think your vision is good: Make a CD distro for kids. > But I'm beginning to think that a USB pen drive distro for kids will > be even better. :). You know, gaming consoles are computers, so the reverse is possible too! They'll like the computer if it looks fun. So if the computer is only running free software, well, that's just perfect! I agree having it on sticks would be nice. This is a part of the DDL philosophy: bring it with you everywhere. > Here in the third world, I haven't been able to find a 1 or 2 GB USB > pen drive. Smallest I found is 4 GB. Occasionally, one finds a 2 GB, > but they are getting rare. I think the smallest ones are 2GB now in France. Currently DDL is still using 1GB only in the live version (installed, it requires 2.5GB without room for anything else, so 3GB disk space is the absolute minimum – hey, how much for the latest Windows 7 alone? :D ). > Is there a way to make persistance the default when running from a > USB? > The maintainer might have to erase the storage from time to time. The persistence tool is supposed to create a persistence file for you. Moreover, if you burn USB keys with the DDL tool, it will create a persistence file. However I fear bugs in the development version of these tools prevent them from working well, which means persistence is broken for the normal user. NB: at boot, the Debian live tools search for a persistence file and activate it, this is the default behavior of our CD. If you erase the key, hem, take care to save the persistence file before! > Or, if I choose Persistance once, does it keep on using persistance? > I'll have to try it and see. :) Booting with persistence enabled is not enough to get persistence work, you need to create the persistence file before rebooting. > I do believe this is the first time I've ever used Epiphany. I often use Epiphany now because it is faster than Firefox and provides several interesting plugins like ads filtering. Since I've read that Google just wants to make people the robots of their smartphones thanks to ads, “services” and games (dixit their CEO, using another vocabulary of course!), I've moved really away from anything they do (I've never been a fanatic either as you know), I even use their search engine much less. > Just found the Minimize Window button.
