You're both right: this scenario (Saros View is in background, new message 
arrives) is worth thinking of. 
The solution is pretty simple: If the Saros view is in the background, it stays 
in the background: no highlights, no notifications, no icon exchanges. It's up 
to the user, whether he/she wants to see Saros related changes, and that 
includes new chat messages. But: If the user reactives the Saros view, he/she 
needs to be able to recognize new messages in the corresponding chat tabs 
(thus, removing the "marker" after a short time span is not an option).
The same holds for a completely closed Saros View.
