Hi Paul, > How relevant is DQSD now that the concept has been adopted > by so many providers (Google's offerings and being embedded > into Firefox as two examples)?
It's still very relevant. For speed to access any form or page online, I have yet to find something even remotely comparable in speed, performance and extensibility than DQSD. The FireFox extension is a browser "thing" - you have to have the browser loaded *before* you hit/post the page. The Google toolbar is a brower thing too, ad as such suffers the same liability. The Google deskbar, however, does offer some really interesting features (primarily the mini-viewer and the global key trapping) that make it worthwhile, but even so - the extensibility level is nothing compared to DQSD. Sure you can build extensions for it in .net - but they're nowhere near as easy to share and distribute, and you suffer from a closed-source model that prevents developers from extending the core functionality. My other complaint (and I'm sure I'll get flak for this) is that Google tracks it's users. DQSD does not. Frankly, our joy is that you're using it, we will not collect or share data about what you do with it. With over 325 *public* "searches" at this particular moment, I don't think any other deskbar is remotely close to our capabilities. That doesn't count the other nifty stuff you can do with DQSD (like Aliases), that can exponentially extend the range of features depending on how you use it. I've got 15 private searches I use on various web sites I manage and tons of aliases that I use at least a few times an hour. Nah, I don't think there's any comparison. Regards, Shawn K.
