I've pondered this myself, and I've even tried several alternatives, but none really compare on the things I value most: * Ease of use (WIN+S, type, enter) * Extensibility (okay, I had to expand my JS knowledge a bit to extend it, but DQSD can do nearly anything I've needed) > Is there a way for it to be used with Linux? Not that I'm aware of. The WebSearcher project ( http://websearcher.sf.net/ ) is linked from the DQSD site as a potential Linux alternative, but it hasn't been updated in the last few years and is designed only for the Gnome desktop. It's also still in pre-release, which doesn't comfort me at all. I've never used it, though, so I'm not familiar with it's features or whether what it does is 'enough.' Also, since some of the searches use VBScript as the processing language and others use ActiveX objects, they're not as portable to Linux as they otherwise could be. I've (off and on) worked on a webservice which will offer the ability to run the searches via a webform - all you'd need to know is the syntax for the command in order to use it, and it'd offer many of the features that DQSD offers. It would not, however, be capable of interacting with the OS, so it couldn't be used to start and stop programs and services on the local computer or utilize the 'note' search as it exists today. A webservice like this could be made to use custom variables/preferences the same as DQSD via cookies, and it could use vbscript and activex objects much the same (if it was running on a Windows server), though it would still require searches to be modified for use.
