Hi Brian, Oh, cool, I didn't know. Then it should definitely be possible to cook up a Vista-specific search.htm and run it as a gadget.
But on the whole, I think the "architecture" of DQSD is kinda doomed. For an input box in your deskbar, it's incredibly complex. Sweet and extensible, yes, but also error-prone and tightly dependent on any whim of the IE team. Ideally, I'd like to get IE out of the picture entirely, except possibly for launching searches.
