Have you tried PractiSearch (http://practisearch.com)? It is all about shortcuts. You can send the selected text to the search bar with a hotkey from any app or even immediately start searching this text just with pressing another hotkey (e.g. Ctrl+C+C) or clicking a mouse button. The hotkeys are configurable. It is also browser independent, however most of the features are possible only with IE. The interface also allows to easily add custom searches or adjust the settings.
