I have a Drake
R4C. With no antenna connected, the peak of white noise
obtainable on any band using the preselector is not at all pronounced, and on 28MHz is barely (but just) audible with the audio gain nearly fully advanced. The RX has no mods (but have a full bag of Sherwood parts and filters waiting to be fitted!). Is this a sign that the receiver needs alignment and/or new tubes, or is it just the mark of an excellent low noise receiver design? How often would an R4C need alignment, assuming no major maintenance has been carried out, if at all? David Austin G4GTP |
