Actually, in the commercial radio biz, that's a feature, not a bug. Keeps dispatchers from turning the volume clean off...

Certainly valid point re: how "engineering" decisions are not always the final word! :-)
However, Drake (and most other manufacturers, including Collins) did NOT put the AC power switch on the receiver's AF Gain control. I guess the shortage of panel space on the transceivers forced them into it. The Drake 1-A got around the problem by using a push-pull switch on the AF Gain control!!
I just back off the RF Gain on the TR-7 to turn it "all the way down".
