Ian -

ALMOST all 4 Series schematics have serial number ranges on them. It consists of the date and first serial number affected in the form MmDdYYXXXXXX. As in 115688000 for 01/15/68 s/n 8000. You may ask how we know it's 01/15/68 and not 11/05/68..? Educated guess since the "early" R-4B was 926677000 for 09/26/67 s/n 8000 and the next one was 05076910501 for 05/07/69 s/n 10501.

Interesting. I've seen 2 different schematics for an R-4B, one with V11 and
one without V11 (OB2). Neither indicate serial number ranges.

My R4B does NOT have the OB2, Drake removed that in the later R4A series, early R4A had the OB2 and 6GX6 product detector, but the 11 tube version of the R4A did away with it...73 Tim K8WBL

Ian:

The R-4B still has the OB2 regulator. The R-4C uses a solid state regulator, in keeping with Drake's transition from tubes to solid state devices. You will note the significant reduction of the number of tubes in the C series.

Removing tubes in the design reduced energy needed, cut down on heating problems, and increased reliability.

I'm a Drake newbie but thinking about getting an R-4B to relive my
childhood. When was V11, the OB2 voltage regulator, introduced (or
removed)? I think the R-4A has it but the R-4C doesn't. If it was removed
as the series progressed, why?

Also why is there no V6 in the schematic?
