Not quite... The two tubes dropped from the "early" R-4A were V6, the 6GX6 Product Detector, and V13, the AM detector and first audio amp. The VR tube stayed on until the second version of the R-4B.

Ian:

The R-4B still has the OB2 regulator. The R-4C uses a solid state regulator, in keeping with Drake's transition from tubes to solid state devices. You will note the significant reduction of the number of tubes in the C series.

Removing tubes in the design reduced energy needed, cut down on heating problems, and increased reliability.

I'm a Drake newbie but thinking about getting an R-4B to relive my
childhood. When was V11, the OB2 voltage regulator, introduced (or
removed)? I think the R-4A has it but the R-4C doesn't. If it was removed
as the series progressed, why?


Also why is there no V6 in the schematic?
