Hi Doug, if it were me I would opt for the 6kHz GUF1 filter. The
stock 1st IF filter is not really very good. I think it is a 4 or a 6
pole filter and very wide. By changing the 1st IF to the 6 kHz from
International Radio you will improve everything but AM. The 6kHz is a
little too narrow for those who like the wide audio associated with AM.
By narrowing the first IF filter and making it more steep there will be
less bandwidth to worry about. For the max effort you will still need
to buy a good CW filter. If you buy just the CW filter, only CW will
improve.

I've been reading the material available on various web sites and thinking about adding a
first IF, "roofing", filter to my R-4C. I use the rig for rag chewing on CW
(and occasionally SSB) and also for CW contests. The new filter would only be to enhance
CW ops during contests. But, normal SSB operation must be retained.
There is the Sherwood option, the 600 Hz first IF filter. I'm not sure I'm
reading the Sherwood Engineering web site correctly but it *appears* that one
would need the filter, the filter switch kit and the custom front panel switch.
That option totals $300.
There is also the GUF-1 from International Radio. It's 8 KHz so not quite the
same thing but no doubt a huge improvement. That option is $120.
Any thoughts or experiences?
