Here's something I'm currently using with my TR-7 that I think would be useful to other TR-7 owners. I operate all the bands from 160 through 10 with the TR-7, so need a preamp for the Beverage antenna on 160, and could also use a bit more receive gain on the higher bands. I already had a preamp for 160 and 80, and a PTT controlled relay box for disconnecting the Beverage on transmit (to protect the preamp). A month or two ago I stumbled across a CQ ad for J-Tec that described a combined preamp/receive antenna switch and decided to give it a try. Here's the link to the description: (http://www.j-tecradio.com/index.html?engasap_2).

It turns out this device is well suited for use with the TR-7 since it allows the preamp to be used with the receive antennas or the transmit antenna, and it includes switching to protect the preamp during transmit when using a separate receive antenna. The preamp can be switched in or out of the line, or you can switch in a 20dB attenuator when needed on 40 or 80. It requires a connection to your transceiver PTT line and is designed to be inserted between the transceiver and antenna (or linear amp). I currently have it inserted in the receive-only antenna loop on the rear of the TR-7. The broadband preamp uses a 2N5109 for good intermod performance and low noise figure. Probably not the best arrangement if you live in an area of strong nearby stations, but out here in the boondocks it functions just fine. The preamp sure made a difference on the few 12 meter signals that were coming through today.

73 and Happy New Year
