"Rodger Singley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Joe and list,
I would stay with the original transformer. A properly operating L-4B with good tubes will produce around 1200-1300 watts peak output on SSB with the stock transformer so any gain on sideband is insignificant. The only place I could see a gain from a replacement Dahl transformer (and it would not need to be a higher voltage one) would be increased current capacity so you could also run 1200-1300 out on CW without concern of heating in the stock transformer. However, at most you are going to gain (on CW) about 2-3 db which is probably not worth it and you will find the next weak link in the chain while doing this. To put this into perspective, instead of buying the Dahl transformer you would get more "bang for your buck" by putting the money into a better antenna and/or lower loss feedline and/or tuner. I built a homebrew amp using 3 4CX800 tubes and a quite expensive Peter Dahl transformer for a VERY conservative 1500 watts out on all modes including AM. It was a fun project to build using high quality components I couldn't afford as a younger ham but I doubt if you could tell by listening on SSB whether I was using this amp or my SB-220 which I built in 1976. 73, Rodger WQ9E > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:owner- > [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Joe Roth > Sent: Monday, January 02, 2006 6:30 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: [drakelist] L4B PS xformer > > > "Joe Roth" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > Happy New Year all Drake gurus!
