I would stay with the original transformer. A properly operating L-4B with
good tubes will produce around 1200-1300 watts peak output on SSB with the
stock transformer so any gain on sideband is insignificant. The only place
I could see a gain from a replacement Dahl transformer (and it would not
need to be a higher voltage one) would be increased current capacity so you
could also run 1200-1300 out on CW without concern of heating in the stock
transformer.

The biggest concern is the temperature of the tubes - the stock fan is not very good for use over 600W. There was a discussion on the Amps mailing list about this - the end result was to remove the fan blades of the stock fan (or remove the fan completely) and push a considerably higher volume of air to keep the pin and plate seals cool. You've gotta have a lot of air to wick away 1000 watts of heat from each tube.

A uitable replacement would be a Dayton 4C761 fan (see pictures at
http://www.electricmotorwarehouse.com/dayton_blower.htm or
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/itemDetailsRender.shtml?xi=xi&ItemId=1611630880) which is the same form factor to a T as will fit in the L-4 / L-4B but you'll have to grind/cut off the flanges (the metal is thin) where the Dayton fan originally mounts.
