Generally speaking, the older bugs work just fine, if they're complete and not bashed up. I've found some issues with badly burned up contacts on some of them. My personal favorites are the Lightning Bugs and I have several of different vintages. They all handle about the same, although I'm stuck on a WW-II version (J-36) made by Lionel as the one I use most often.
