I have a mid 1950s Champion that I bought on e-bay years ago. It was
allegedly tested and in perfect shape... Fortunately Vibroplex still
had the necessary parts to repair it. I fixed it, and got to really
like it. It is the el-cheapo model, but after cleaning the bearing
points and lubing them with Kroil, it has a really nice action. I
adjusted the key and gradually have gotten it to where it is a pleasure
to use. It has been 35 years since I used a Vibroplex bug with the
jeweled bearings so I cannot accurately compare the feel between the 2
systems. The Champion seems to work at slower speeds better than the
more expensive models. This is fine for me since I normally use it on
VHF where speeds tend to be lower, anyway. I doubt that I would be any
happier with one of the more expensive models. I also have 2
Vibrokeyers and like them very much as well. It is hard to fault a
design that has lasted for more than a century, and a manufacturer who
still has parts for one that is 50 years old on hand. Certainly a fine
example of a "durable good"! Sort of like vacuum tube ham gear.
