Craig Roberts <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So, I got this TR-4C in the mail yesterday. It's in nice shape cosmetically, but was very dusty -- obviously it sat idle for a long time.

The little transceiver was nearly inoperative until I cleaned all contacts, tube sockets and tube pins. Now the radio receives properly and transmits full power (about 190 watts on 40, for instance).

HOWEVER, the radio intermittently shifts frequency about a KHz or so and exhibits muffled audio. It happens most often after keying the radio, but not always. Pluggin in a mike or headphones or a key can also cause this to happen. Recovery can sometimes be effected by keying again (but not always). Seems like a contact or a loose ground, doesn't it?

Any other ideas, just in case? This may have happened years ago, too. A letter from the Drake service chief, Bill Frost, in 1979 suggests that the relay might be bad. It was apparently then replaced by the owner, but I don't know what the result was.

Many thanks and 73,

Craig
