James:

The R7A operator's manual that came with my R7A is an amended R7 manual.  The table of contents contains the following wording:

R7/R7A Supplement

The following accessories and modifications have been added to update your R7 to an R7A for more versatility.
   1) A noise blanker (NB7A) has been installed.
   2) A 500 Hz filter (SL500) haws been installed in selectivity position marked .5.
   3)  The selectivity position marked 4 has been adapted to provide a bandwidth of 9 kHz for AM reception.

My R7 service manual is dated 1979 as well.  My RR3 manual (commercial marine R7) is dated 1980, but I haven't seen any differences in the circuits common to the R7 (the alignment error that has been discussed here is also present in the RR3 manual).
