The only difference between the 4 kHz and 6 kHz filter with the synchro-phase AM detector is the selectivity.

I had both filters, and always thought the radio sounded better with the 4
Khz than the 6 Khz.  Both were in the radio, and I always chose the 4 Khz,
with a little PBT cranked in as the better sounding option. YMMV.

Well, like I said, you trade fidelity for selectivity. If you want maximum communications efficiency, then the 4 kHz is certainly better. If you want to listen to music, then the 6 kHz is probably better.

The PBT allows you to listen to whatever "part" of the received audio spectrum you want to hear, so if you like music with a heavy bass or lots of treble to compensate for natural hearing rolloff, - OR - a restricted range speaker or phones, - OR - ...

That's why they make different b/w filters! :-) There is even an 8 kHz version! Or you can use the resistor in place of the AM filter and have the ~ 9 kHz b/w of the roofing filter.......
