Well, if you have a 27 ohm 1/2 W resistor lying around you can stick it in series with the filament and see if the hum goes away! Prove my theory.... :-)

Thanks, Garey, I knew it had to be something like that.  The best clue was
that one diode section is used as the noise limiter, and the noise limiter in
this radio is mostly a hum injector at the moment.  I'll look for a 8BN8.
