Carey,  it appears from your description the TR4 is working
fine in AM mode.    That mode is a suppressed carrier AM,
meaning the carrier level or power output is very low on
idle and when modulated the power out varies with the
modulation.    The 6JB6 tubes are not rated for high level
constant power output, and would quickly be destroyed if
that was done.   Like SSB carrier modulation, in AM mode its
a suppressed carrier AM modulation used to protect the final
tubes from being destroyed.

this is my first post. and my first drake. so here it goes.
i have a early model tr-4. i have been slowly working the
bugs out of it. i was going to try it out on am but no
carrier. is this normal? when i spoke the relative output
moves upward. thanks for any help
