In addition to head phones you might consider getttin something similar to the MFJ-616 Speech Intelligibility Enhancer.  I have heard some positive comments from others, have never tried one but am considering.  The concept seems reasonable an there may be other suppliers doing the same thing.  You can check out the unit at http://www.mfjenterprises.com/products.php?prodid=MFJ-616 .
