Al, thank you very much for your comments. They are worth considering for
sure.

Headphones are headphones, it's not rocket science. Even a cheap $10 pair
should work better than using a speaker for what you want and need to do.
Probably the most important part of buying a set of headphones is the fit
and comfort. If they don't fit your head or aren't comfortable for wearing
a long time don't buy them. Some can fit very tight and will squeeze your
head way too much and others will be loose and won't want to stay in place.
The ones that fit around the ear like a cup will probably suit your needs
best because they will cut out external noise and make it easier to hear
what you want to hear. The last thing to look at is the cord. You will
want a cord long enough to reach where you need it to but not so long it's
going to get in the way. Some cords are coiled 17 - 20 feet long and can
get in the way or pull on your head when you move. Others are not coiled
and can easily be cut to the needed length. The last thing to look at if
you are buying expensive ones is the availability and cost of replacement
pads. The pads can wear out and need replacement so make sure what you buy
you will be able to get pads for in 5 - 10 years. Before you buy new
headphones be sure you can return them should you find out they are not
right for you.
Many of the outboard audio DSP units have a place to plug in an external
speaker or headset. I have the ClearSpeech mobile speaker and was able to
mount it in my Yaesu external speaker enclosure. You should be able to do
the same with the Drake external speakers. I wired mine so it used the
external speaker and jack of the Yaesu speaker. This way I can plug my
headphones into it without any problems.
