I have a Heath FET-VM, and the only problem seems to be with temperature
stability. The null is very temperature sensitive and drifts all over
the place.
For most Ham use, as long as it has an analog meter and a high 10-11
Megohm input impedance it will work just fine. Generally the actual
value is not all that critical when peaking and nulling adjustments.
A plain old voltmeter probe with a 1M resistor in series at the probe
tip will work just fine with your Heath for DC measurements. As Mike
pointed out yesterday, the Phone plug used by Heath was a special part,
a "stereo" three-circuit plug with an insulator in place of the "ring"
portion. If you're using a regular phone plug, either a two circuit or
a three-circuit with the "ring" left floating, you probably ought to
limit the meter to less than 500VDC. Again not really a problem, cause
what we use the VTVM for is typically alignment which is less than
25-50VDC max.

So how does a Heath VTVM compare to a RS FET VOM? Mine has similar or
better charactistices to a VTVM. I guess I am too young as I never
used a VTVM, but as a kidI bought what I could afford (long ago).
BTW I acquired a Heath V-7A VTVM at a hamfest to play with, but it is
on the shelf because I could not find probes.
I know I used my FET VOM to peak up the R4B, and seems like that
circuit at the TP is very high impedence.
