ALL T-4X(any) transmitters will mix and match with ALL R-4(any) receivers.

That said, the T-4X has one flaw that may or may not be important to you if you plan to work SSB. The T-4X has four-pole crystal filters, which results in marginal, at best, signal purity on SSB. Carrier suppression is less than good, and 3rd order IMD is also poor, but this is ONLY on SSB. CW is fine. If you intend to use an amplifier, or live close to another active ham or two, I would strongly advise against the T-4X for that reason.

The T-4XB or C will work just fine however. There are minor cosmetic differences between the 'X and the 'XB, primarily in the MAIN TUNING knob and skirt, and in the panel printing "above the belt line". The knob and skirt could be replaced on either to make them match. Many people put the B-Line skirt on the R-4/A because it's sloped surface was MUCH easier to read than the flat one used on the earlier models. Actually I don't think you would have a problem swapping the earlier set from the receiver for a B-Line knob and skirt with someone that wanted to return an earlier receiver to "stock"! :-)

The only other consideration, depending upon how 'late' your R-4A is, (does it have a letter, R, G, B or Y,) at the end of the serial number? If it does have a letter, ideally you would look for a T-4XB with the SAME letter at the end of its serial number. This is of concern only if you plan to transceive on SSB, and is not a major problem if you don't get lucky with the T-4XB and get the same letter! See the article at

if interested further.

Don't forget you will also need an AC-4 power supply to use with whatever T-4X(any) transmitter you get. The AC-3 will also work, but is not quite as convenient to upgrade with the AC-4R kit from The Heathkit Shop. This should be done with just about any Drake power supply you find today.

Welcome to the list, and don't hesitate to ask questions as you go along!

Hello,

I just joined Drake list because my Dad at 88 years old let me have his old Drake R-4A Receiver.

25 years ago when I was a teen We took Ham radio classes learning code together.

Now that I’m more mature I want to carry on in my Dad ‘s footsteps.

My Question is Now having a R-4A (mint ) what transmitter would work the best.

T-4X transmitter (mentioned in R-4A Manual)

T-4XB (solid state mates with R-4B solid state)

Will a T-4XB transmitter work with a R-4A and what would the Plus or Minuses compared to

the R-4A ( I have this Unit Already) and a T-4X.

Thanks in advance for your comments and opinions

Regards,
