Richard -

Two different discussions under one Subject..... :-)

These were referring to the alignment of the Injection Couplers in the TR-4. They're double-tuned circuits, and the manual recommends an "Alignment Load" of a 1000 ohm resistor in series with a 0.005 uF cap, used to "detune" the opposite section. Seems like many have come to the same conclusion that I have, that it's just not necessary given a few iterations of the two adjustments.

The Calibrator problem was the OP didn't have a receiver to cover 10 MHz.

Gary -

That's good to hear! I've had the same opinion for years, but I hate to tell someone to ignore the "factory" procedure. Kinda sets a bad example...... :-)

I've seen it in other procedures, other than Drake gear, but I've found that with two-three-four iterations I come out the same.

For the record I used the cap/resistor load on the first two or three TR-4's I aligned and forgot it after that, it didnt make a bit of difference I could see and after a few cracks, pops, sparks, and ozone I felt it wasnt worth it. A tech at Drake once told me the same, dont worry about using the load.

I must be missing something. At least on the R-4B and C the calibrator is connected directly to the antenna jack. All one has to do is to hang a bit of wire on the jack and use a general coverage receiver to zero-beat the calibrator wtih WWV or an accurate local source.
