Well, I guess I have to answer this, since it was obviously aimed at me.

I don't know 'why' the 'other' list was started, just that I was asked a couple of years ago if I would help moderate it. Since it had a LOT of members and was pretty active, I agreed. About a year ago the original owner asked if I would take over the list as he had lost interest and/or didn't have the time to invest in it. By then it had 450 members, and seemed to be about the same activity as Drakelist, just at different times. One list will have a little flurry of activity, then the other, but rarely at the same time.

So. Point one, people DO lose interest and just 'go away'. Others end up in the hospital for three months and are unable to even operate a mouse. So it certainly does NOT hurt to have a second, known, 'backup' if you will, list in operation. I figured the 450+ members indicated there was 'some' purpose' being served and it was therefore worth 'saving'.

Point two, Yahoo groups are a very large operation, and 'new' people looking for a list will probably go there first, so it doesn't hurt us to have a presence there. I'm sure that just about every member of that list is also a member of this list. I DO have a few people join every week that I have never heard of before, so I suspect that perhaps they are NOT members here.

Point three. I DO NOT see 'my' list as a competitor to Drakelist. If someone asks me about lists I always give them the information on both. SOME people do not like the 'mailman' system for some reason, some 'trust' Yahoo, and some 'hate' Yahoo. Whatever!

Point four. Although both lists are somewhat active, I rarely see a 'cross-post', which is a very good thing. I subscribe to and contribute to both, and see them both as a positive for the Drake community. I actually subscribe to one called 'drake-radio-operat...@yahoo' which has about one post every three-four months. I respond and direct them to these two lists so they don't think the Drake community is dead!

Personally, I do NOT like multiple 'sub-lists' that seem to pop up for every minute sub-culture. If we followed 'some' examples, we'd have a separate list for R-4C's with FET IF amps.! But I DO think there is some small advantage to having two 'primary' lists in operation, _especially_ if the users are smart enough to NOT cross-post.

Lots of folks start lists for lots of reasons...

Some don't like the way a list operates(we had way too much discussion about that on this list)
Some don't like the policy of a list owner
Some feel a specialized list is needed.
Some need an ego boost.

One advantage of having others lists is that if the primary one dies....there are established alternatives.

The disadvantage is that multiple lists force users to subscribe to many of they want all the posts.
