Joe,
First of all, I assume that the S-meter and receiver sens control
adjustment are properly calibrated, i.e., minus 1.35 volts AGC, S-meter reads
S-1 with RF gain fully CW (no antenna and the preselector detuned) and 60
db over S-9 with the RF gain turned fully CCW. I'm also assuming that the
calibrator is operating properly.
If the above is true, tune in the calibrator on the 3.5 band and peak
the preselector; the S-meter should read AT LEAST S-9 and probably more
like 20 dB over S-9. If it does, you most likely have an audio problem, but
if the S-meter reads significantly lower (like S-7 or less) the problem is
likely farther back in the signal chain.
If the problem *IS* farther back in the signal chain my first
suspicion would be C-126 at the input to the passband tuner. This cap was
intermittent on my R-4A, causing signal levels to drop by 2 or 3 S-units and
thereby necessitating advancing the AF control to 2 o'clock to hear anything
reasonably well. Garey has noted that this capacitor is a fairly common
failure in the R-4A. Mine was intermittent, but it could just fail and stay
that
way so the symptoms described above would be present all the time, not
just on and off as mine did.

I have a 13-tube, R-4A receiver that is an excellent performer and fun

Is it normal to have the volume control at nearly 1 o'clock for normal,
comfortable listening? Other Drake and non-Drake receivers seem to have a
comfortable audio level about 9 o'clock. Is there a way to boost this
receiver's
audio output or is there something obvious to check? Any suggestions
always appreciated. Thanks in advance and happy holidays to all the Drake list
folks.
