Mike - if you're an ARRL member there are lots of articles in past QST magazines that may get you started.
One series by Doug DeMaw W1FB (SK) might be a good place to start. It was a four-part series titled "Basic Equipment Servicing" that ran in QST from December 1981 thru March 1982.
