It's actually easy to build an isolation transformer - IF you can find a couple
of big tranformers of identical ratings. Filament transformers for huge tubes
would be good, a pair of "pole pigs" would be the extreme. Connect them
back-to-back, with the secondary of the first transformer feeding the secondary
of the second one, and take output off the primary of the second. You lose a
bit of efficiency, but it works. The other way would be to use a split primary
120/240 transformer, feed one of the 120V primaries and take output from the
other. The transformer would only be capable of half it's rated power in this
configuration, but with a big enough transformer you could power just about any
rig.
