I see no need for either one. All my vintage equipment now has 3 prong
power cords. I put them on as soon as I get one.
What am I missng???

Because the original poster said he wanted to use a GCFI.
It's not needed with a double wound transformer.
Do building sites use isolating transformers for power tools?
In Europe they have to use a 55-0-55V transformer for portable tools by
law.
I always got my isolating transformers from a builders supply depot.
