This is a perfect opportunity to exercise my right to remain silent. But, as
usual, I will foolishly waive that right.
As many of you know, engineers may set out in the beginning to build the best
possible radio (or whatever product), but as the project progresses, other
priorities begin to shape the final product.
I have seen this happen myself. A good design is submitted for approval and the
marketing dept. returns it and says,"this isn't going to cut it, get the cost
down". So you start making compromises . If you can save a couple of bucks and
your going to make 500,000 units, it adds up to significant dollars. In the
case of the R-4C, it may have been making the crystals filters and noise
blanker optional and other design compromises. I don't see anything wrong with
a consumer deciding to put those improvements back in. After all, his motive is
not making a profit or running a business.
His motives are based on performance for the most part.
That being said, I agree with Gary, I probably wouldn't recommend the Sherwood
mods for everyone. A used R-4C is going to cost you $300 or so, and the mods
are going to get you up to about $1000 plus lots of your own time implementing
them. It definitely improves the radio, but is it worth a kilo buck? I suspect
not. I love mine and won't sell it, but probably won't do it again.

As for starting another group where discussions like this would not be allowed,
I just can't think of a situation where depriving myself of differing opinions
would be beneficial.
