No, ID doesn't have patents but they have John Carmack who is a 3D genius.
Id (and the unreal guys) makes millions because they have the smartest and
best 3D developers that create the best 3D engines. If all it took was
money for others to create their own engine, they probably would but
unfortunately it isn't that easy.
