I've finally come around to implement this. The result is quite a bit faster than color expansion without DRI. :)
http://master.penguinppc.org/~daenzer/test/r128-cce-colorexpand.diff is against the DRI trunk. Please test, especially on little endian machines. Any feedback is welcome.
