I was about to hack on mysqladmin, to make it default to localhost
instead of defaulting to the (now not existing) UNIX filesystem
socket. Did you do that?

A couple of comments:
1) We still need password/username. Those will return eventually so
there is no reason to pull them right now.
2) The set-variable, socket, and protocol can be deleted (protocol
can be hard wired). Check to see if verbose is still doing anything.
