I haven't used splint yet, but I would like to.

It is easy to get warnings for unused function return values with gcc
by using the warn_unused_result function attribute. I opened a bug for
this. There are a lot of error conditions that MySQL does not handle
because too many return values are ignored -- most of the failures are
from memory allocation.
