I'd agree in principle, but I think there might be performance issues
with that approach.
Either way, cross-engine 2PC needs to be fixed first (that is,
implementation completed beyond where the code is now).

mess... Innodb has them, and that is fine to me.
A cross engine FK is not on the list right now, and I doubt we will
ever see
it. It is not in the target list of features for the short term.
