The implementation difficulties Jay mentioned were storing the new column
information in frm files. The backward compatibility of the frm files was/is a
requirement for MySQL (for which the original vcol code was written). Is it so
for Drizzle *now*? If not, then extending the frm file format might be a way to
go...
