If you're "ok" with your data being truncated, then truncate it. We
shouldn't silently modify people's data for them in some situations...

Yeah, I don't have a problem with that. That sounds fine.
I just chose this point in time to jump in and remind folks that Drizzle
was not founded as the most SQL standard compliant RDBS. Perhaps I
chose my moment poorly. Did not want to be rude and blog it or start a
new ranting thread.
