I've been watching the back and forth, perhaps a simpler solution is the way to go. 4 types, INTERNAL, ALPHA, BETA, GA
Versions would be: INTERNAL 1 INTERNAL 2 .... ALPHA 1 ALPHA 2 ... and so forth. Regarding dates etc, well Release Notes will give you the date for a given version. I do think you should have version number, what is the version number for Drizzle ultimately going to be:, e.g. 7.0? Prefix all above with version number 7.0 INTERNAL 1 ... ... 7.0 GA 1 At GA you can drop the 'GA' and you get 7.0.1 My 5 cents.
