I've been watching the back and forth, perhaps a simpler solution is the

4 types, INTERNAL, ALPHA, BETA, GA
While I agree this _is_ simpler than much of what is being discussed, I
don't think it's ideal.
I really, really dislike "Alpha" and "Beta" and "GA" in version numbers.
Let's say we have a build. Let's imagine that we run that build through
some QA and we decide it is great. Ideally, I want to bless /that/
/build/ as GA ... regardless of what type of build it was.
Ideally we do not want to
* recheck out the same revision
* modify the name
* check IN the GA name change
* re-tag
* rebuild
Sure, scripts can do all of that ... but ultimately we end up with a
_new_ binary that we technically should re-run through the whole QA
process again, even though all that has changed is a version name string.
I strongly suggest we avoid putting "types" of builds into the version
number. A build is a build, and only time will tell what it is really
useful for.
Sincerely,
-Eric
