Not too much time ago I've tried partitioning, even deleting rows was malfunctioning. Not to mention the incompatible changes between maintenaince version. To underline this situation the bug point to the blog of Monty W. that explain the shortcomings of 5.1.30 GA As you noted if you are brave enough to stay with 5.1 (I do) it's a matter of rename a file and few other stuff to have mysql builded and installed. For me the time needed to re-test all the application using MySQL is two order of magnitude (well more 1.5) bigger than the rename/compile/install stuff. Yep I do agree with you in part at least here, but the fact is that 99,8% of the problems are little and easy to catch before production. Having a number of identical servers help a lot, having only one server with gentoo is a total waste of time. Francesco
