Hi, Valerie –

There are two possible meanings of “administrator” in this context that you
should be careful to distinguish.

(1) In DSpace, there is a user (or users) who is the “administrator” and is
responsible for things like setting policies and managing the overall structure
of the repository. This will be a member of your library staff.

(2) On the other hand, in broader IT terms, the “systems administrator” is
the person who is responsible for maintaining the actual server on which DSpace
(or any other software program) runs.

If you have a systems librarian on staff who’s comfortable installing and
maintaining software, they may be able to do (2) as well as (1). As Bram
suggested, your first step should be to share the DSpace documentation with
them. In my own experience, it’s not that difficult for an experienced power
user to set up and maintain a DSpace instance. (FWIW, I’m an archivist working
in a medical library – but I had some previous hobbyist experience with systems
administration.)

However, you’ll still need to collaborate with your IT department to connect
your DSpace instance to the wider network, particularly if you plan to make it
available to the public Internet. If you’re planning to create an institutional
repository, your IT department should be involved as a project stakeholder,
whether you end up hosting it yourselves or contracting with a vendor.

Susan,
I work in a medical library. So I wonder if someone in IT would need to be the
administrator or is that something a library staff member can do...
Right now, my goal is find as much information as possible about DSPACE and if
we may run into resistance from our IT department.
Thanks...

Yes, that's it. We are hosting it ourselves and have a system administrator in
our library that manages the server side of things and librarians that handle
customizations as needed.

Just so I understand this...
When we install DSPACE, it will be on our server, correct?
But it we wanted to, we could have someone else host in on another server?

Our library is looking into DSPACE, and my question is...
How involved does IT have to be?
Is this something the library staff can fully install?
Our IT department blocks anything considered "Online Storage."

Would DSPACE be considered online storage?

Thanks!
