The only explanation that I have ever been able to come up with is that
if you enter an item handle in a browser the item needs to be displayed
in the context of some collection, the owning collection.

Not a serious suggestion but - you could effectively abandon the current
community/collection structure by only having one collection, depositing
everything in there, and then tag items with keywords as required. But
in doing so you would lose much of the authorisation functionality that
is based on collections.
