Ha, I was incorrect the option is NOT included in DSpace 1.7.2!
However, both patches are on trunk and will be available with 1.8.
Until then you will need to apply the patch locally, it's very small.

You'll want to apply all the patches tagged with that issue and it will fix 
both the problems I described in my earlier email. Sorry about the confusion. 
Here's the specific patches (found on DS-828):

Rev #6102 - adds the restore-mode option Rev #6461 - fixes the failure when no 
handle is supplied.
