Tim Donohue commented on DS-1005:
---------------------------------

Mark,

In regards to your "nothing has ever been taken out of trunk" comment. I
honestly wouldn't hold past experience as a guarantee for future experience. :)
I think we will need to make some tough decisions in the future on how better
to "package" things and whether projects all remain "out of the box" or if some
move to optional installs.

So, my point here is: I'm not adverse to this staying in Trunk as-is, because I
know we will need to tackle this larger topic (it's just a tough one to tackle
with only a week left before 1.8 Release Candidate #1).

But, I do think there are some benefits to separating some of the
non-DSpace-specific code out from DSpace Trunk. I've already touched base with
Richard a bit via email. I think we all agree that's the best for long term.
In fact, Richard said he's already contacted Sonatype about setting up an
'org.swordapp' Maven space. So, if Sonatype is able to respond quickly it
might be an option to release the common library under 'org.swordapp'.

Going back to the issue at hand: We're currently in a state where the SWORD
project is still figuring out ongoing maintenance for their common codebase. At
the same time, DSpace will be moving to 1.8.0 Release Candidate #1 next week.
So, we may be stuck in a situation where if we want SWORD 2 support, we may
need to accept it as-is for now and work to clean it up later (where 'later'
could still be before 1.8.0 final, if we can work that quickly -- or it might
be post-1.8.0 if things don't go as smoothly.)

(Sidenote: I'm also starting to wonder if this discussion is better to migrate
to either a mailing list (dspace-commit or dspace-devel) or to IRC. JIRA isn't
the easiest place to read through a large discussion thread.)

> Ticket for the addition of SWORD v2 to DSpace 1.8. When building, you'll
> need to make sure you update dspace.cfg to include the new config options.
> Before 1.8 launch, we'll move these into modules/swordv2.cfg
> To test:
> 1) Apply patch
> 2) Unzip zip file to create new dspace-swordv2 module
> 3) Do the maven dance, deploy, visit /swordv2/servicedocument, enter DSpace
> username and password, check a service document is shown
