It sounds like the basic resolution may require several fixes: 1. Fix DS-1655 (which will remove the "initial questions" step). This should make it more obvious to submitters what the 'dc.date.issued' is going to be set to (and hopefully avoid the issues when DSpace auto-sets it incorrectly). This should fix the issue for future additions to DSpace (at least through the UI) 2. Write some sort of script (a curation task?) which can report existing items which might have incorrect issue dates. The general logic would be to location items which have the same value for dc.date.issued and dc.date.accessioned. Those items would be the ones where the "dc.date.issued" was automatically assigned by DSpace. Unfortunately the cleanup process may require human intervention, and the result of this report may be a very long list. (Is there a way to take advantage of Bulk Metadata Editing here to help with the metadata cleanup?) 3. The outstanding question is what to do about items that arrive via a non-UI means (e.g. SWORD, bulk ingest, or similar). If an Item comes in without a dc.date.issued, does dc.date.issued get automatically set by DSpace? Or should DSpace just leave the dc.date.issued empty if none was supplied?

When Google & Google Scholar index DSpace content (from a variety of institutions), the "dc.date.issued" value is incorrect the majority of the time. The reason is that, if unspecified, DSpace sets this issued date to the *date of a...
