Well I would like to remove it all together, as I already have a
dc.contributor.author[en_US] for every item. Under the discover facet on the
XMLUI theme I have the following:
Author
* unknown (1739)
* (1627)
Everyone one of the 1,627 I am almost certain is included in the unknown
facet's results of 1739 items.
The metadata for one of the items is like this:
dc.contributor.author
en_US
dc.contributor.author
unknown
en_US
I would want to remove the blank one from the record.

I take it you would like that if the author name is empty, don't "display" that
field in item list and item summary list. Is that right? In that case, the
method depends on whether you are using jspui(the default) or xmlui. There are
sections in the DSpace user's manual on how to customize displayed metadata,
but I'm not sure how you could extend that technique to conditionally exclude
metadata fields.
