I can confirm that this is what I did in the end - I had a play around on my DEV system (with a file with an accented char in the filename) and was able to delete and replace the offending bitstream without problems - the hardest part was working out how to find a copy of the offending file in the asset store! I managed to pick my way through the database and track it down though.
